TRN application process
How VAT registration support works
- Eligibility review: calculate taxable turnover for the historical 12-month period and consider expected supplies during the next 30 days.
- Entity check: confirm the legal entity, trade licenses, owners, branches and any existing tax registrations.
- Evidence file: organize invoices, contracts, bank records, customs information and a clear description of business activities.
- EmaraTax preparation: complete the application details consistently and review the proposed effective registration date.
- FTA follow-up: prepare additional evidence or explanations if the authority requests clarification.
Common causes of VAT registration delays
Applications may take longer when the declared activity does not match the trade license, the turnover schedule cannot be traced to invoices and bank records, ownership information is incomplete, or the requested registration date is not supported. Cross-border businesses may also need a clearer explanation of where customers, suppliers and goods are located.
A pre-submission review helps identify these gaps before the application is sent. It also creates a file that can be reused when preparing the first VAT return.
After the TRN is approved
VAT registration creates ongoing obligations. The business should update invoice templates, confirm the assigned tax periods, maintain VAT-ready accounting records and prepare for the first return deadline. The FTA states that VAT returns and related payments are generally due within 28 days from the end of the tax period.

VAT registration questions
What is the mandatory VAT registration threshold in the UAE?
The threshold is AED 375,000 of taxable supplies and imports over the relevant period for a UAE-resident business. The test covers the previous 12 months and the expected next 30 days.
Can a UAE business register for VAT voluntarily?
Voluntary registration may be available above AED 187,500 of taxable supplies, imports or taxable expenses over the relevant period.
Does a Dubai free zone company need a TRN?
It may. The registration thresholds apply to free zone companies, although the VAT treatment of particular designated-zone transactions requires a separate review.
Can a non-resident business have a UAE VAT obligation?
Yes. The FTA applies different registration rules to non-resident businesses making taxable supplies in the UAE, so the facts should be checked before relying on the resident thresholds.
